John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 4 (T4), operated by JFKIAT, has launched a range of measures aimed at easing passenger flow during the busy summer season.
Central to these is the introduction of an Enhanced Passenger Process (EPP), designed in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and technology provider BigBear.ai.

With 17 million passengers expected at T4 over the summer, the new EPP system is one of several operational updates focused on reducing wait times and improving the overall airport experience. This comes as T4 undergoes a 1.5 billion USD redevelopment to support increased capacity and modernise terminal operations.
Roel Huinink, Chief Executive Officer of JFKIAT said:The EPP, which we’re launching just in time for the start of the busy summer travel season, will streamline the arrivals process for millions of passengers travelling through T4. We’re pleased to partner with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and BigBear.ai to implement this system and streamline the arrival process for U.S. citizens while maintaining a high level of security.
The EPP uses facial recognition technology to automate identity verification for US citizens arriving from international destinations.
Upon arrival, passengers opting into the programme will have their photo taken, which is then matched with government records. This streamlines the identity check process traditionally carried out by a CBP officer, though officers will still carry out interviews and customs declarations as required. Use of EPP is voluntary, and traditional screening methods remain available.
Kevin McAleenan, CEO of BigBear.ai said:BigBear.ai is proud to support John F. Kennedy International Airport – Terminal 4 with proven facial comparison solutions for the Enhanced Passenger Process. Our mission is to help modernize airport operations by enhancing both efficiency and security, ensuring a seamless and safe experience for travelers and airport partners alike.
The launch of EPP and associated initiatives coincides with a broader expansion project that has increased T4’s capacity by 25%. The terminal processed 27.7 million passengers in 2024 and is expected to handle higher numbers this year.
